I started running after my first daughter was born. Just a little . . . maybe 2-3 miles a couple of times per week. After my second daughter was born, I started Running Mate's 5K101 program, signed up for my first 5K and now I find myself running 25+ miles per week on average. I used to hate running, so I'm not sure where this new found love of it came from. But here it is! I'm in no way a serious runner, in no way take myself seriously as a runner, and fully realize that I will never, ever be competitive against anyone other than myself.
My love of fitness began with Jazzercise. Yes, you read that right. I continue to think that Jazzercise is one of the best fitness classes offered and best of all, it is FUN. After taking classes for a year, I went though their certification workshop and became an instructor/franchisee. I taught for 7 years. Then Angel Girl came along and you know the story. I hope that once the girls are both in school that I'll get to return as either a student or an instructor. I don't plan to give up running, but it would be great cross-training.
I think I also mentioned that I was a cheerleader for 3 seasons. Though not a true workout in itself, there's nothing that will keep you motivated in your fitness routine like wearing tiny hotpants with chaps and what can really only be called a sports bra on a field in front of thousands of people. It was around this time in my life that I also began to really enjoy strength training and would spend several lunch hours each week at the gym even though I was teaching 5-7 Jazzercise classes per week.
Outside of fitness and running, after earning my master's degree, I spent 4 years working in an insect physiology lab at the same university where my husband earned his PhD. After he graduated (and got a job), Angel Girl was born, and I then made the transition (and it was a transition) to staying at home. Three years later, Little Miss Spitfire came along.
